About the Role:
As a Lactation Consultant, you will educate women, families, health professionals, and the community about breastfeeding and human lactation. You will facilitate the development of policies that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Acting as an advocate, you will provide evidence-based breastfeeding support and care from preconception to weaning for women and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee and coordinate lactating patient needs by providing accurate information and appropriate lactation assistance, applying age-specific knowledge relevant to patient care.
Offer anticipatory guidance to promote best breastfeeding practices and minimize potential problems or complications.
Conduct quality assurance programs to monitor the program's caliber and maintain appropriate consult documentation and statistics.
Evaluate lactation-related products and make recommendations regarding their benefits to patients.
Provide information on accessing breastfeeding equipment and devices suitable for lactating mothers and breastfeeding infants.
Adapt behavior to specific patient populations, respecting privacy and tailoring communication styles.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: Preferred - Associate's degree in nursing.
Work Experience: Required - 2 years of experience in maternal-child health nursing. Preferred - 3 years of experience in lactation consulting.
Certifications: Required - Current registered nurse (RN) license in the state of practice. International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Duties may require exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
Working in a healthcare setting, there may be an occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment.
