The basics of this position:

The Lead Truck Driving Instructor works directly with and supervises the full and part time instructors who provide a variety of teaching/learning activities that prepare students for the class A-commercial driver’s license (CDL) and the Class B Hazmat commercial driver’s license examination and an entry-level position in the trucking industry. The lead truck driving instructor works collaboratively with Program Coordinator and Program Support team to ensure the CDL program and the students are successful, ensures curriculum is up to date according to industry standards, DOT, and state regulations.

What you'll do:

  • • Teach classroom portions of the Truck Driver Training Program including, but not limited to: Basic truck operations, defensive driving practices, introduction to vehicle inspections, trip planning, managing life on the road, and explanation of backing maneuvers, coupling, and uncoupling.
    • Teach hands-on portion of the Truck Driver Training Program including driving simulator training modules; maneuvers on the driving range (backing, shifting, etc.); and behind-the-wheel training in city and highway driving situations.
    • Evaluate and grade students throughout the program, in accordance with established guidelines. Maintain accurate student files.
    • Monitor the condition of the Truck Driver Training Program equipment and report any problems to the Supervisor and recommend repairs or replacements. Schedule maintenance of the trucks and trailers, parking lot, simulators, and other items as needed.
    • Maintain relationships with employers in the trucking industry and assist with the recruitment of students.
    • Responsible for keeping curriculum up to date and ensuring the truck driving program is following all DOT, state, and federal regulations.
    • Ability to provide maintenance on equipment in emergency situations.
    • Maintain current knowledge, skill, and certifications in field of specialization.
    • Creates the weekly schedules for the full and part time instructors to ensure proper coverage of each cohort. Works with staff to cover shifts.
    • Collaborates with Program Coordinator to schedule day and evening cohorts according to staff availability.
    • Address performance, attendance, and behavioral issues with the instructors in a professional and confidential manner. Reports any issues to the Program Manager and Program Coordinator with recommendations for corrective action as needed.
    • Attends transportation meetings, conventions, and trainings to learn about industry trends, changing standards and regulations then implement the latest trends and standards into the curriculum.
    • Facilitates meetings with instructors, addresses questions, concerns in a positive and informative manner. Reports and involves Program Manager as needed.
    • Responsible for completing a road test with potential instructor new hires and providing feedback on skill level of instructor candidate. Trains and develops all new instructors until they are ready to teach independently.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Education, experience, and other requirements:

• High School or GED and seven (7) or more years of related experience in the trucking industry including driver trainer or safety specialist.
• Valid class A-CDL driver’s license that is clear of an air brake restriction. Clear driving record and negative DOT required drug test.
