Job Description

Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor the Environmental Scientist may be assigned lead responsibility for specific projects, including salmon monitoring programs in the Sacramento River Watershed to develop population estimates. Duties in this position include data collection and analyses, scientific technical writing, participating in technical teams and working groups, presenting fisheries data to the public and other stakeholders, and coordination with local, State, and federal agencies and entities, as well as with other CDFW staff throughout the State. The Environmental Scientist will also work closely with the Department of Water Resources and other interested stakeholders, to provide data and other information and participate in meetings related to the development of a juvenile production estimate for spring-run Chinook salmon.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife North Central Region Fisheries Program is looking for an Environmental Scientist to join our team to support salmon monitoring projects in the Sacramento River Watershed. Data collected from these monitoring efforts contribute towards a large-scale multi-agency effort to develop a juvenile production estimate for spring-run Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River Watershed, and contribute to the management of water operations in real-time to reduce impacts on listed fish species. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the conservation and management of spring-run Chinook salmon, a State and federally threatened species, in the Central Valley of California.

The Environmental Scientist will take on an array of duties, including, but not limited to: salmon population monitoring and survival studies; data review and analyses; scientific report and document writing; preparing and presenting scientific data to the public and interested entities; representing the Department on technical teams and in other meetings; and coordination and collaboration with a broad array of stakeholders, including other Department staff, staff from other State and federal agencies, and other interested parties. This position may provide leadership to seasonal staff in the field. The Environmental Scientist will also play an important role in the development of a juvenile production estimate for spring-run Chinook salmon in the Central Valley and participate in technical groups and meetings and respond to data requests to assist in the juvenile production estimate effort.
