About AmeriCorps program

AmeriCorp Members build new homes and repair existing homes for qualified families in Central Texas. The work is construction and members will be expected to lead diverse groups of volunteers.

The AmeriCorps program is a Service/Learning opportunity lasting approximately 46.5 weeks; where members serve alongside staff and skilled volunteers on our Construction sites and in our Administrative offices. Members will acquire leadership skills that translate directly into job experience and the satisfaction of making a difference in your community and country

Our Program:

Austin Habitat for Humanity, Texas is excited to invite you to join our team as an AmeriCorps member. You will be in the vital role of providing leadership on our construction sites by engaging volunteers, homeowner families and community stakeholders.

Austin Habitat aims to make the AmeriCorps experience not only positive but also a foundation for a lifetime of service. Beyond job-specific skills learned on-site, each member is instilled with valuable leadership skills an earns a deep understanding of the issues facing our partner families and the Austin community, which will ideally lead to a lifelong interest in assisting families in need, whether through affordable homeownership or other means.

This is a paid volunteer position through CNCS (Corporation for National Community Service), managed through Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI).

Benefits

  • Living stipend distributed bi-weekly (total $17,000 over 46.5 weeks),

Service Activities

  • Assist with hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping. 
  • Lead diverse groups of volunteers, ensuring that they are well-employed while on the work sites.
  • Use volunteer management techniques to facilitate positive experiences for volunteers and homeowner families working on site.
  • Collaborate with construction staff to identify skilled/enthusiastic volunteers and cultivate their involvement in Habitat’s work (i.e. encourage them to consider being trained as regular site leaders and/or returning volunteers).
  • Maintain site safety through modeling of safety practices and guidelines, volunteer education, and site monitoring.
  • Attend safety trainings and team meetings with construction staff.
  • Provide on-site orientations and safety talks to groups of volunteers and homeowner families.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, often on rough and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift at least 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions – sites are often not heated during winter and not air-conditioned during summer.
